Plato's Republic, Book II, Part 2 (pp 43-59) "Socrates' Reply"
1. As he begins his investigation into justice, Socrates makes the point that those with weak eyesight prefer to examine large things rather than small ones. What is the connection between these remarks and Socrates' investigation of justice?
2. Socrates' description of his city begins with a central governing principle. What is it? (cf ¶ 370c)
3. Roughly outline the stages that the city goes through as it grows. (I count about four phases - try to identify the points in Socrates' discussion when he introduces a whole new category or class of activity).
4. Why aren't the citizens themselves well suited to be the guardians of their city?
5. Why must the guardians have a "philosophical temperament?"
6. Why must the storytellers be supervised?
7. Many modern educators are very reluctant to censor educational material, often explaining that students should be free to decide for themselves if they are to become mature. Would Socrates agree? Explain? (cf Republic pp 52-56)
I have read pp 43-59.
